The Alcove Perspective of the Filipinas Heritage Library is launching a photography shoot-exhibit in Ayala Malls. Photo shoot is scheduled from August 29 to September 17 and best photos will be displayed from October to November. It is open to all interested amateur and professional photographers.

SLab: A New Gallery & ArtLab for Contemporary Art

SLab (Silverlens Lab) is the new gallery, established in 2008 in Makati City, for contemporary art under the Silverlens Group. Silverlens Gallery will continue to show photography and new media while the adjacent SLab will be showing painting, drawing, and sculpture. The two spaces will be bridge-linked, the former being a piano warehouse and the latter being a former auditorium.

SLab will have two galleries, a 120 square meter main space for longer curated shows, and the 20 square meter smaller gallery for young artists, for projects the curators are working on, and for collectors and artists consignments. The backroom for both Silverlens and SLab will be actively showing work by all the represented artists. Their artists push the boundaries of their medium and are aggressive in their dialogue with a critical audience. Represented artists include Patricia Eustaquio, Lena Cobangbang, Mariano Ching, Christina Dy, Gary Ross Pastrana, Rachel Rillo, and Isa Lorenzo, among others. They are also actively represented by Silverlens internationally in art fairs and gallery collaborations for their exposure, recall, recognition, and collection.

The inaugural show of SLab is Patricia Eustaquio who will be showing painting and multi-material sculpture. A Magna Cum Laude Graduate of painting from the UP Diliman Fine Arts Program, Eustaquio returns to her core art after years of fashion design. Based on J.S. Bach's Well Tempered Clavier, a body of musical work that uses all 24 keys of the piano, indiscriminate of majors and minors, she creates 12 pieces that are odes to the sublimity of music, but silent. We see shaped canvases filled with feathers and other stilled life, an exquisitely tooled miniature piano in leather, a ceramic violin with a frozen heart.  That the space was formerly a music auditorium is beyond coincidence.

Asked why she joined SLab, Eustaquio narrates, "I wanted to work within the context of a new space and the energy that comes from it.. Of course I also want my works to be part of a wider dialogue, and with the art fairs, SLab is participating in, I feel that I have more of an opportunity to grow while my works are scrutinized by a larger audience."

Asian Photography Festivals (2008-2009)

Singapore International Photography Festival

October 8-31, 2008

Scheduled to take place from 8 to 31 October 2008, the Singapore International Photography Festival (SIPF) is the first event of its kind in Southeast Asia. This biennial festival strives to provide a platform for Southeast Asian artists to showcase their works alongside their international peers in various venues such as National Museum of Singapore, The Arts House, 2902 Photo Gallery and more.

3 central components of the SIPF are the official exhibitions, workshops and portfolio review. The festival kick starts with exhibition openings and 2 days of portfolio review sessions for up to 50 Southeast Asian photographers, followed by a series of workshops facilitated by curators and senior photographers for up to 45 Southeast Asian photographers. Selection for workshops/portfolio reviews is based on project submissions.

Open to public are a series of evening presentation by invited curators, artists and festival directors. Over the weekends are series of public lectures and forum to share thoughts, ideas, issues and current trends in photography.

Along with the official exhibitions and programme, is SIPF Fringe which counts on the participation of arts galleries, arts spaces and education institutions to promote photography across Singapore. Individual and organisation that are planning to have photography related activities in October are welcomed to ride on the extensive festival publicity.

The SIPF committee is made up of volunteers and relies on the good will and support from various institutions, corporate organisation and the public to make this festival a reality. Members of the public could contribute to this festival by signing up as volunteers or by purchasing the festival publication.

Photography is one of the most accessible art forms. What you see is what you get. Or is it?

The collection of photography as a contemporary fine art is steadily becoming more important to serious collectors both here and abroad. This talk answers why. And why the thrill of collecting art is all the more intense with the contemporary. The work of Noelle Katigbak Tan, currently in its last editions at Silverlens this month, after 6 years of being shown, is a satisfying sample of deep collecting.

A slideshow of important internationally-collected art will be presented, vis a vis Philippine photography. It also answers the whos and hows of photography collection--the artists, print processes, editions, pricing, and provenance.

This visual presentation is ideal for individuals with established collections, young collectors, artists, architects, designers, and the curious.

Isa Lorenzo is the creative director of Silverlens Gallery which deals with photography, and the soon to open SLab (Silverlens Lab), which will be showing the rest of the contemporary arts. Lorenzo, herself an artist who works with photography, spends her downtime looking at art and carefully building a collection of the contemporary.

FILIPINAS: Photographs by Isa Lorenzo will be exhibited at the Atrium Lobby of the SM Mall of Asia, Pasay City from 25 to 30 August, 2008. An opening reception will be held at 4pm on August 25, Monday.

The photo exhibition FILIPINAS is comprised of thirty (30) black and white portraits of distinguished Filipino women who have achieved national and international recognition in various fields.

FILIPINAS was conceptualized by Isa Lorenzo, fine art photographer with a Master’s degree in media and photography from the New School University-Parsons School of Design in New York City. Deanna Ongpin-Recto, formerly First Secretary and Senior Foreign Affairs Adviser at the Philippine Permanent Delegation to UNESCO, is the curator of the exhibition.

First shown in 2004 at the Cultural Center of the Philippines, FILIPINAS has since been made into a book, which is available at Powerbooks, Fully Booked, Booktrends, Popular Bookstore, Rustans and Travel Cafe.

Painting with Light: An Exhibition of Abstract Photography by Henry Bateman

Painting with Light is Australian artist/photographer, Henry Bateman’s second Philippine exhibition. Where his first exhibition “Through Australian Eyes” explored different places in the Philippines from an expatriate’s point of view, in this latest exhibition Bateman addresses a wider range of ideas whilst limiting his lens to Metro Manila’s Makati City.

 

Using computer manipulation, he abstracts his photographs to explore his response to issues that range from current events to observations of Manila’s art scene. Bateman’s works encompass his reaction to the war of terror in “The Fractured Sentinel” and climate change in “Broken Spaces I and II” to viewing art in a Shopping mall in “Mall Art II – Stand in Line” and in a gallery in “Gossip” from a photograph captured at the Ricco Renzo Galleries.

 

Bateman’s work is unashamedly abstract and conceptual presenting images designed to provoke a dialogue with his camera’s captures. As American artist DL Keur says in a review of his work on her web site www.zentao.com/art-reviews-by-dlkeur. “Henry Bateman is a photographer who photo-manipulates his work into art that is at once unique and evocative.”

 

Painting with Light is on show at Ricco Renzo Galleries, 2nd Floor, LRI Design Plaza, 210 N. Garcia St. (formerly Reposo), Bel Air 2, Makati City from 15 August to 10 September. Open cocktails will be at 7pm on the 15th August.

Drawing and Untitled: Noelle Katigbak Tan

Silverlens Gallery is proud to announce the opening of the first solo show of Noelle Katigbak Tan in Manila at 6pm on August 14, Thursday. The show will run until September 27, 2008.

 

For her show, Noelle Katigbak Tan will be exhibiting two sets of works, Drawing and Untitled. According to the artist, “These bodies of work depict landscapes that hover between emerging and being, the seen and the subliminal. They challenge the viewer to question what it is they can actually see in the photograph.” Aptly called Drawing, Tan’s series of 18 darkroom printed photographs seem like sketches made with pencil at first glance. Bathed in pure white, Tan’s panoramas blind viewers and hint of familiar scenery. A stark contrast to Drawing, Untitled is a collection of 13 silver gelatin prints in rich black with spark-like bursts of light.

 

Paul Roth, Curator of Photography and Media Arts at the Corcoran Gallery of Art describes Tan’s work: “Noelle Tan makes photographs that are at once conceptual explorations of our current social unease and technical forays to the medium’s outer limits. In contrasting tones of black and white, her photographs elide detail to suggest submerged truths; and dissipate reality to explore the unknown.“

 

Noelle Katigbak Tan was born in Manila in 1969. She earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from New York University and her Master of Fine Arts degree from the California Institute of Art. She has had solo exhibitions at Civilian Art Projects, Project Gallery 4, and DC Arts Center in Washington; the Center for Photography at Woodstock, NY; School 33 Art Center in Baltimore; and the Creative Artists Agency in Beverly Hills. Her work is included in the permanent collection of the Corcoran Museum, the Center for Photography at Woodstock, and the Creative Artists Agency.
