Rachel Rillo's 'Manila' at Silverlens Gallery (Updated)

Rachel Rillo will be opening her photography exhibit, metaphorically called “MANILA”, on February 13th, 6pm, at the Silverlens gallery. It is her second exhibit after being the inaugural show at the warehouse space the photography gallery moved into in September 2006.

Her photographs are intimate in size, drawing the viewer in what would otherwise be a common sight. Rillo, returning last year from the United States, continued shooting the wires project she started abroad some three years ago. But in Manila, “the more I looked the harder it was for me to see anything else. The wires were the perfect metaphor for the chaos shrouding the city.”

The images are emotional; alternately funny and somber, gentle and violent, delicate and tensile. The deliberate exclusion of buildings and clouds must have made for a funny sight while Rillo was shooting. Her viewfinder framing, physically dodging all other evidence of viral urban growth shows the exquisite that is above us if only we care to see.

Mangyan Cultural Festival (Updated)

To celebrate National Arts Month, the Mangyan Heritage Center in cooperation with the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) and the Provincial Tourism Office of Oriental Mindoro - invites you to the

The Mangyan Cultural Festival honors the richness and diversity of the Mangyan cultures through exhibits, theater, dance, and musical performances by the Mangyans themselves.

The original inhabitants of Mindoro, the Mangyans are composed of eight groups – the Alangan, Bangon, Buhid, Hanunuo, Iraya, Tadyawan, Tau-buid, and Ratagnon. While each group has a distinct culture and language, all of them uphold similar values such as non-violence, honesty, sensitivity to ecology, and the sanctity of the community.

The Buhid and Hanunuo Mangyan syllabic writing systems were declared National Cultural Treasures in 1997 and inscribed in UNESCO's Memory of the Word Registers in 1999. Over 30,000 Hanunuo Mangyan poems, traditionally inscribed on bamboo in the syllabic script, have been recorded. In recognition of his expertise in Hanunuo script and poetry, Ginaw Bilog was named a National Living Treasure in 1993.

These are among the many amazing facts to be discovered at the Cultural Festival. The exhibit will feature traditional Mangyan homes, photographs, artifacts and crafts from all the Mangyan groups. Learn to write your name in Mangyan script and sound the shell or carabao horn bugle. Spin cotton into thread, weave cloth and baskets, string beads, prepare bark cloth, and play traditional musical instruments. Support Mangyan traditions by buying their crafts and products. You can even sample native Mangyan food or try their betel chew.

Capping the festival is *Ang Paglalakbay ni Waraan** *(The Journey of Waraan), a play featuring the Mangyans' struggle to retain their identity and celebrate their culture despite the many challenges they encounter. Performing in the play are students from Mt. Tabor Mangyan Formation Center, Tugdaan Mangyan Center for Learning and Development, and Mangyan Education Center.

*Ang Paglalakbay ni Waraan *will be shown at 1:30-3:00 PM and 6:30-8:00 PM on February 8.

Entrance to the exhibit is free, while tickets to the play are sold at P50.00, P20.00, and P10.00 (students).

Ibon-Ebon Festival 2008

The local government of Candaba, headed by Mayor Jerry Pelayo is organizing the Ibon-Ebon Festival (literally, “birds and eggs”) on February 1-2 for students and to service the local and foreign tourists. The festival features the migratory birds and the municipality's growing duck-egg (ebun) industry.

This is an opportunity not to be missed by both Bird watchers and the general public alike to see flocks of birds (starting October and staying until February) take a winter break and the time for breeding.

2. APPLICABILITY: The rules and regulations laid out by this document are complementary to Wacom's Submission Agreement and shall be applicable to all contests held by the Wacom Community, unless otherwise stated on the contest information sheets or elsewhere on the website. The Sponsor of all contests held by the Wacom Community is the Asia Pacific Division of Wacom Co., Ltd.

3. ELIGIBILITY: The Contest is open only to legal residents of countries and regions that come under the management of the Sponsor. These countries and regions include but are not limited to Australia, Brunei, Korea, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Nepal, New Zealand, Pakistan, Philippines, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand and Vietnam. 8. PRIZE: Prizes as indicated on the Contest Information of each contest is nontransferable and must be accepted as awarded. No cash or other substitution may be made, except by Sponsor in the event that a prize, or prize item cannot be awarded for any reason; in such event, Sponsor will in its sole discretion award a substitute prize or part thereof of equal or greater value. Winners are solely responsible for any and all applicable taxes (including where applicable sales tax) due for his/her awarded Contest prize, as well as all applicable fees and expenses related to the acceptance, award and use of his/her Contest prize. If sensor resolution continues to double every 18 months, the camera of 2020 will capture giga-pixel images instantly with enough detail to easily fill a 10 x 10-foot print.

Emerging technology will focus magnetic fields through a solution of oil and water, shaping it into a remarkably sharp liquid lens worthy of those billion pixels.

When photo sensors are stacked in layered sheets, they capture images on several focal planes simultaneously. And when processed together, the focus and depth of field of the composite can be selected after exposure is made.

A combination of GPS and LIDAR technology (similar to RADAR) will extend image manipulation by automatically fabricating 3D digital models, enabling subjects to be relit with virtual lights and shadows after their image is captured.

The brainchild of Mr. Leo Castillo, Photoworks is a workshop designed to help build a solid foundation on the art and craft of photography. Leo created it based on his studies at the New York Film Academy and the New York Institute of Photography. With his background in film, photography and production, combined with his expertise in training and development, he created the workshop in 2002. It has since grown to become an acclaimed photography class producing more than 500 photographers, some of whom have become professionals.

The People

Every year, the NCCA works hand in hand with arts and culture organizations, local government units, educational institutions, business establishments, and individuals in holding various initiatives in the arts. Now on its sixteenth year, the National Arts Month celebration with the theme "Ani ng Sining" has evolved from a Manila-centered activity, to a truly national event with key activities in all three major island groups - Luzon, Visayas, Mindanao. Involving hundreds of artists from the different disciplines of arts and reaching thousands of people from all walks of life. The National Arts Month is truly a festival of the Filipino people to involve their participation in "Celebrating a Bountiful Harvest in the Arts."

Jay Alonzo has been teaching photography for more than 11 years and is now considered as one of the country's leading photography instructors. Microsoft, among many others. In 2007, he has been tapped to teach overseas.

'The Changing Face of the Earth' Photo Contest

UNESCO’s Earth Sciences Programme is running a photo contest on the theme of The Changing Face of the Earth, to raise awareness among youth of the state of the planet. There are several cameras and 40 book prizes to be won. Entries close on 30 June 2008.

Contestants may enter in one of the two following categories:
  • 15-20 year olds and
  • contestants aged 21 years and over.
Each contestant is invited to submit a single colour photo depicting her or his personal testimony to the Earth’s rapidly changing landscape in a positive or negative way. The photo should illustrate one of the ten themes from the International Year of Planet Earth (see list below). Photos may portray rural or urban scenes and should depict changes to the landscape caused by natural phenomena or resulting from human intervention.

The Prizes

Each of the winning contestants in each category will receive a copy of two UNESCO books in English or French, depending on their preference: Explaining the Earth and The Changing Face of the Earth.

Explaining the Earth depicts our planet’s place in the Universe and in our Solar System, the Earth’s structure, plate tectonics, the role of the atmosphere and hydrosphere, the formation of reliefs, the ice ages and natural hazards.

The Changing Face of the Earth traces continental shift since the Pangaea, a single supercontinent, began breaking up 250 million yeas ago, via 10 maps.

In addition, the best entries in each category will win a camera. The names of the winning contestants will be announced in the October 2008 issue of A World of Science and on UNESCO’s science portal.

Surfacing: A Photo Project on the lives of Desaparecidos

About Projekt Desap

They were activists, wanting to change society by arousing and organizing amongst the masses. They were ordinary civilians, going about their daily lives. Suddenly, they disappear. Desaparecidos is the Spanish word meaning “the disappeared.” It was coined in Latin America where thousands became victims of enforced disappearance implemented by tyrannical regimes.

Enforced disappearance is “committed by government officials or by organized groups acting in behalf, or with the support, consent or acquiescence of the government,” according to the International Convention for the Protection of all Persons against Enforced Disappearance. It is among the most common human rights violations committed in the Philippines, often by suspected military agents in the name of counter-insurgency. Under the administration of President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, there have been 184 desaparecidos, the highest since martial law.

SURFACING, a photographers' initiative done in cooperation with the Free Jonas Burgos Movement and Desaparecidos, is an effort to create and sustain public awareness on the issue of enforced disappearances. It shows the lives and struggles of 14 families of the disappeared, as well as that of the disappeared.

“A photograph is an expression of absence and a form of transport,” says writer John Berger. Let these photos express the pain and injustice of the desaparecidos’ absence and transport us to the reality that we need to face and collectively challenge.


In October 2007, Projekt Desap held an output-based photo essay workshop for amateur and professional photographers who were interested to develop their skills in creating compelling photo essays/stories while creating awareness of human rights issues.

The workshop, which ran for four weekends, included lectures from veteran photojournalists Gil Nartea, Luis Liwanag, Jes Aznar and Bogsi Panaligan. Participants also underwent shooting exercises and photo critiquing. These helped them in the integration period where they documented the lives of the participating desap family of choice.

At the end of the integration, the pool of photojournalists closely worked with the participants in the editing of the photo essays for presentation and exhibit.

SURFACING is a continuing project open to all photographers who are willing to join this human rights advocacy. Projekt Desap intends to hold more Surfacing workshops for amateur and professional photographers in the Philippines and all of Asia. THE ALCOVE PERSPECTIVE: Call for Exhibition Proposals

The Alcove is inviting all interested photographers and camera clubs to submit proposals for exhibition for the year 2008.

  • The Alcove is a premier venue for exhibiting black-and-white (or monochrome) photographs.
  • It can accommodate around 20 to 30 frames for exhibition depending on the final sizes of the framed artworks.
  • All photographs must be in accordance to applicable Philippine laws.
  • Local and foreign artists are welcome to apply. Priority will be given to Filipino photographers.

Applicants are required to submit a proposal letter with the following:
  • Photographer’s resume/bio-data or organizational background for photography-related organizations
  • Sample works
  • Preferred exhibition schedule
  • Brief outline and concept of the proposed exhibit
  • Contact number and address

A committee will screen all submissions based on originality, visual impact, composition, subject matter, and technique.

Results of the screening will be communicated to the applicant in writing within two to four weeks after submission. Qualified applicants will be asked to visit The Alcove to discuss terms of agreement and contract signing.

The Alcove’s obligations

Once the proposal is approved, The Alcove shall:
  • Provide the gallery for the exhibit and the venue for the opening cocktails (should the photographer opt to have one)
  • Assign manpower and manage other logistical requirements for the exhibit
  • Discuss the schedule and other deliverables with the photographer
  • Handle curatorial and marketing functions
  • Provide frames (on loan) for the exhibit
  • Discuss final layout for the exhibit with the photographer
  • Accommodate queries regarding the exhibit
  • Facilitate collection of payment and remittance to photographer (if it is a selling exhibit)
  • Prepare summary and/or conduct evaluation
Photographer’s obligations

The photographer shall:
  • Finalize a list of artworks based on approved terms
  • Pay a fee of Php 5,000.00 to cover overhead expenses. Minimum exhibit period is two weeks and may be extended depending on the availability of the gallery. For each succeeding week, cost is Php 1,500.00.
  • Submit the artworks framed and matted (if The Alcove’s frames will be used, pick up will be done at least a week prior to submission)
  • Provide titles and other pertinent details for the captions and the price list (if it is a selling exhibit)
  • Confirm details of the opening cocktails, if applicable.
In the case of a selling exhibit, a 25% commission will be deducted from gross sales.

2nd Pitik-Mulat Photography Visit

Pitik-Mulat Photography Visit is a bi-annual gathering of professional and student photographers set out on an exposure trip and photo shoot in an indigent community to produce photos representative of and relevant to our times. The activity culminates in an exhibit and critique session with fellow participants and invited professional photographers and photojournalists.

The chosen site for this year is Tondo, Manila where the highest concentration of urban poor in Metro Manila is located. The particular community is called Hapilan which derives its name from a Visayan word for dumpsite. Hapilan is a coal-making community behind the Manila dumpsite. Almost all the residents of this community are living below poverty line and within the means available from their immediate environment. Currently compounding their already impoverished condition are continuing threats of displacement due to infrastructure development and privatization plans of the local and national government.

Aside from drawing attention to the issues of poverty and social injustice in the country, Photo Visit also seeks to encourage and train young and creative individuals in the field of documentary photography.

Last year, Photo Visit was successfully launched and joined in by 22 student photographers from UP Diliman together with photojournalists Luis Liwanag, Raffy Lerma and Vivian Limpin.

For this year's Photo Visit we are again inviting professional and student photographers to take part in this activity intended for the integration of social and artistic awareness. Student participants will be provided an excellent opportunity as amateur photographers to produce powerful photos through their visit to poverty-stricken communities, to have their photos exhibited and published, and to dialogue and work with some of the country’s best photographers and photojournalists.

The Photo Visit will be on February 16, 2008. Photo outputs will be exhibited on the succeeding weeks in different venues.

Inner Vision: A Photography Workshop by Tilak Hettige

Inner Vision is a 3-day workshop that will discuss and demonstrate the techniques of creating art-like images that touch the heart and soul of others. You will participate in numerous exercises designed to improve your creativity and help you recognize when and where to look for artistic creations. The workshop will provide you the opportunity to learn techniques of good composition and the use of fundamental visual blocks. It will be a rewarding and inspiring experience unlike any other photography workshop you have attended before. This is the only workshop of its kind in the Philippines and is among a handful of such workshops in the region.

What will you do differently afterwards?

Instead of taking hundreds of snap shots, you are going to be selective and capture the essence of an event in one photograph. Your photographs will now be a self- expression of your art rather than just a documentary record. You will now be able to simplify your images giving them more visual impact—a product of pre-visualization and not post production. Your eyes will see things differently and deliberately, taking time to admire the wondrous beauty of nature, or the numerous facets of human behavior.

Who should attend the workshop?

If you are now proficient in the use of your camera controls, you are ready to understand the techniques of seeing and capturing creative images. The workshop will cater to any types of students because it utilizes all four types of learning styles – visual, audio, interactive, and from written materials.

Who is the Lecturer?

Tilak Hettige, a product of New England School of Photography in Boston, USA, has worked in the photography industry since 1981 in places like Boston, Washington D.C, Sri Lanka, Oman, and the Philippines. He is an accomplished author-photographer . He first won international recognition when he became the International Photographic Society (Washington D.C.)'s Photographer of the Year in 1997. In addition to winning many subsequent awards, Tilak’s works have been published in many books, international newspapers, magazines and calendars. His photographs have also been displayed in many exhibitions in the here and abroad—several of them are now in private collections in several countries.

Among his publications are the recently released Tilaka: The Spiritual Third Eye and Saffron Robes: A Photographic Essay on Buddhist Monks. Currently he is working on two more books.

Peter Bialobrzeski: Teach & Work Photography Workshop

29 January to 28 February 2008

The Idea:

German photographer and lecturer (Hfk Bremen) Peter Bialobrzeski will be travelling around Southeast Asia from October 2007 to March 2008. He will be spending at least 4 weeks in each participating city, working and conducting workshops.

The cities to be visited are: Hanoi/Vietnam; Jakarta/Indonesia; Bangkok/Thailand; Kuala Lumpur/Malaysia; Manila/Philippines; Singapore

The Project:

  • Peter Bialobrzeski (Kunsthochschule Bremen; World Press Photo Award 2005) will live and work for a month in 6 different cities in Southeast Asia. Peter Bialobrzeski will be visiting local partner institutes, design schools and galleries, presenting his own work and discussing his artistic approach to the theme of urbanity. During the residencies, he will be working on a project called “Urban Nature“, that is, the relationship between the green landscape and the modern infrastructures that dominate Asian megacities.
  • In workshops to be held in each city, Bialobrzeski will be supervising a group of 10 young photographers. The theme of the workshops will be urbanity. The goal of these workshops is to engage in a critical discussion of the work of the participants, to strengthen one’s conceptual thinking and to develop/put together an exhibit. Workshop participants are ideally photographers (students and/or professionals) whose works highlight the city and urbanity.
  • The best works produced during the 6 workshops will be included in a photo exhibition that will travel around the region. A maximum of 124 photographs will be included in the exhibit: 2 photographs per workshop participant per city, plus 2 photographs by Peter Bialobrzeski per city.
  • At the end of the project, a book with Bialobrzeski’s photographs taken during the six residencies may also be published. HatjeCantz Verlag, a publishing house that Bialobrzeski has worked with in the past, has expressed interest in producing the said publication. A paperback edition of the same book shall also include the works produced during the workshops.

The EPSON Photo Contest Marathon is open to all visitors and guests of the 12th Philippine International Hot Air Balloon Fiesta.

Students, amateurs, hobbyists and professional photographer are welcome to use any digital SLR, digital point-and-shoot or cell phone camera to interpret the given theme for the day.


Day 1: Happiness and beauty:

Participants must first secure a Special Shooters Pass ID from the on-site OneWorkshop booth. The access pass enables participants to use the special shooting area that allows photographers to shoot the balloons at close range.

Access passes are limited. The PIHABF event organizer may close the special shooting area once the limit has been reached.

Rules and Guidelines

Photos MUST be taken during the 12th Philippine Hot Air Balloon Fiesta competition period of February 7 to 10, 2008.

White borders around the area are optional, but must not exceed one inch (1") on all sides.

Built-in camera B&W, sepia tone and colored prints are allowed.

Printed output that is manually retouched and/or painted over is not allowed.

Creative effects done within the camera at the time of exposure, such as multiple exposures, flash fill, lighting and filtration are allowed.

Digital retouching of density, contrast adjustments, minor cropping of composition, burning and dodging, and global adjustments IS TOLERATED.

Major manipulation of main images through adding and subtracting IS NOT allowed.

The name of the participant should not appear on the face of the entry.

The decision of the board of judges will be final.

Submission of Entries

All entries must be printed on 8 x 10â EPSON photo paper. Only prints from the on-site EPSON ProLab OneWorkshop printing booth will be accepted.

Standard fee for 8 x 10â printing is Php 350 per print on EPSON Satin Photo Paper.

Participants using the EPSON printing service will be entitled to the following:

Winners and finalists of the EPSON Photo Contest Marathon will be announced and awarded daily following the hot air balloon night glow.

The daily winners and ten (10) finalists will be on display each day at the designated OneWorkshop exhibit area.

An exhibit of all 10 winning entries and 40 finalists will be mounted at SM City Clark, featuring formal opening and ribbon-cutting ceremonies with PIHABF and an SM Executive Officer. Mounting, panels and cocktails are sponsored by EPSON.

A special feature on the ten (10) winning photographers together with all winning entries and finalists will be exhibited online for one year at www.philphotography .net sponsored by OneWorkshop and at www.philballoonfest .net

Entry Retrieval

Non-winning entries may be retrieved on the day after submission from the on-site OneWorkshop booth.

Non-winning entries may be retrieved after the event at OneWorkshop, G/F 2241 La Fuerza Plaza II Don Chino Roces Ave., cor. Sabio St., Makati City.

Deadline to retrieve entries is February 25, 2008. Entries not claimed after the deadline will automatically become the property of the Philippine International Hot Air Balloon Fiesta (PIHABF) and EPSON who may dispose of them as they see fit.

Restrictions and Disclaimers

The PIHABF and EPSON reserve the right to reproduce, exhibit or publish submitted images for promotional purposes but shall indicate and acknowledge the photographers. PIHABF and EPSON may display the prints in a public venue or publish the prints for the purpose of
promoting the competition or any off-shoot event arising from the competition without financial compensation to the photographers. Copyright for the photograph, however, still belongs to the photographers.

PIHABF, EPSON and its photography event organizer OneWorkshop, Inc., as well their immediate family or household members are NOT eligible for participation in the EPSON Photo Contest Marathon.

Due care will be taken to ensure the safety of all entries. However, PIHABF, EPSON and OneWorkshop, Inc. cannot be held responsible for the damage or loss of any entry.
