2008 Ateneo Art Awards: Nominations Now Open
The Ateneo Art Gallery is pleased to announce that nominations are now open for the 2008 ATENEO ART AWARDS. This art prize is presented annually by the Ateneo Art Gallery , the country's premier museum of modern Philippine art, in association with Metro Society, Shangri-La Plaza , UnionBank and YStyle of the Philippine Star, in keeping with their shared vision of bringing art into the national consciousness. It is also sponsored by Smart Gold.
The ATENEO ART AWARDS has been recognized locally as the arbiter of excellence in contemporary visual art practice and internationally as "the most important art prize for an emerging artist in the Philippines " (Gina Fairley, Art Monthy Australia).
What distinguishes the ATENEO ART AWARDS from other art competitions is that it does not have a call for entries of works produced for the contest. Artists must be nominated by people in the art community on the basis of works that they have produced and exhibited within the 12 months preceding the nomination period. A nominator must be a member of the current or past juries, a public gallery director (commercial and non-commercial) , an independent curator, a professional visual artist or art administrator (must have participated in or organized at least one solo or group exhibition in a public venue), a published art writer, or an art educator residing in the Philippines. The nominated visual artist must be a Filipino citizen, 35 years old or below on May 31.
All nomination forms must be accompanied by visual documentation in either of the following formats: JPEG, AVI, WMV, MPEG, MOV, SWF and other PC-compatible formats in CD, 35-mm slide transparencies or 5R photographs.
Deadline for submission of nominations is at 5pm on May 31.
The Ateneo Art Awards recognize the idealism, verve and promise of Filipino youth, and celebrate the awe-inspiring brilliance of their creative imagination. They honor innovative, enlightened, and committed visionaries who, through their exemplary practice of the visual arts today, symbolize the hope and promise of a nation.
