Philippine-Japan Joint Photography Exhibition

The Japan Foundation, Manila (JFM) and the National Art Gallery of the National Museum of the Philippines present a joint photography exhibition on June 4, Wednesday at the Museum of the Filipino People, to usher in Philippines-Japan Friendship Month. Titled, “Counter-Photography: Japan’s Artists Today”/ “Swarm in the Aperture: Recent Photography in the Philippines”, the exhibition brings together the Philippines’ and Japan’s young and progressive photographers who bring to fore a novel way of looking into and presenting varied photography themes and techniques.
“Counter-Photography”: Japan’s Artists Today seeks to present the “invisible world” through works by Eikoh Hosoe, Hiroshi Sugimoto, Miho Akioka, Miyuki Ichikawa, Akiko Sugiyama, Chie Yasuda, Kazuo Katase, Hiroko Inoue, Tomoko Yoneda, Tomoaki Ishihara, and Michihiro Shimabuku. The featured works, as conceptualized by Japanese curator, Yuri Mitsuda, do not intend to “serve as a documentary evidence for any particular reality. Rather, they deliberately reveal an aspect of reality that has become invisible, namely, “spirit”. These works constitute an attempt to present new realities and alternative ways of looking at the world”.
Complementing the Japanese exhibit, “Swarm in the Aperture: Recent Photography in the Philippines” brings together the works by Datu Arellano, Nana Buxani, Neil Daza, Kawayan de Guia, Taommy Hafalla, Wawi Navarozza, Gina Osterloh, Kat Palasi, Teena Saulo, Steve Tirona, and VJ Villafranca. Curated by Patrick Flores, the Filipino counterpart “veers away from the exclusively commercial pursuits that mistake the picturesque for the beautiful… and prompt the audience to engage the photographs with intimacy and to take away from this process of creative cherishing nothing less than a critical memory.”
Organized in cooperation with the Embassy of Japan, the joint exhibition’s regular run will be from June 5 – July 31 (Wednesdays to Sundays), at the 4F North and South Wings of the Museum of the Filipino People, Rizal Park, Manila.
